the predator

POSITIVES…
- The Predator is back causing mayhem, bringing bloody violence, and gore. It’s what fans want.
- Seeing people running for their lives, and trying to fight back against the Predator always has entertainment value.
- Cast of actors like Keegan-Michael Key, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, and the rest bring some nice comedy to the franchise.
- Expanding on the mythology of the Predators is a huge plus in my book.

NEGATIVES…
- I don’t know why it happened, but Shane Black gave us a lazily told story here, which is a huge negative in my book.
- Movie’s just all over the place in tone and narrative, with a certain incoherence to the plot.
- This is one of those movies where you need to toss logic out the window if you want to remotely have some fun with it.

a simple favor

I get that most dark mystery thrillers lean more towards the serious side, but why can’t it also be a fun trashy experience? That’s where “A Simple Favor” comes in. Director Paul Feig uses his experience doing comedic films, and brings quite a bit of that tone into this movie rather convincingly. I think his style benefits this story, because as it progressively reveals the deliciously scandalous twists and turns, it helps that the movie is aware at how ridiculous some of those plot turns can seem. The comedy keeps things in check, and reminds us that we’re suppose to have some fun with it all.

While some people might balk at the idea that this neo-noir thriller is actually embracing a light-hearted attitude toward the material, it’s still very much dead serious about the plot. A good mystery allows us to follow along with the lead character that’s trying to figure out the mystery, and this movie does exactly that. It goes down paths that you might not have even expected, and that’s what makes this a good mystery thriller. I admit that there were some plot turns that seemed absolutely far-fetched, but it didn’t matter as much as it probably should, because I was having too much fun watching the movie.

The two not-so-secret weapons as to what makes this film an absolute delight to watch, are Anna Kendrick as Stephanie, and Blake Lively as Emily. Those two are amazing in this! Anna Kendrick brings the perfect innocent-not-so-innocent bubbly personality to her character, while Blake Lively brings the perfect naughty snarky attitude personality to hers. Those two distinct character differences gives the two an excellent counterpoint to each other, while the Actresses works their magic by showing us their great chemistry working together.

Not to be completely over shadowed by the two, Henry Golding as Sean also leaves a really indelible spot in the movie. Seeing Sean get drawn into the mystery with Emily and Stephanie, and seeing how he fits in to this movie, you start to realize that while it seemed like this movie is a vehicle for Kendrick and Lively, it really had to have Golding as the third lead character to make this story even stronger. Watching how each one of the characters interact with one another is part of the fun of this movie.

Needless to say, it’s hard to dive deep into “A Simple Favor” without talking spoilers, so I’ll leave it with these final thoughts. While I think the characters and the mystery are what will keep you glued to the screen until the very end, there are other elements that makes this so entertaining. There’s the little fun moments that’s all over the place, the captivating conversations between the lead characters, Blake Lively’s wardrobe, and the soundtrack that just perfectly compliments the overall tone of the movie. So if my feelings for this movie isn’t obvious already, I absolutely had a lot of fun watching this enjoyable flick!

mandy

I know it’s going to sound very cliche for me to say this, but I felt like I was high on drugs when I was watching “Mandy.” Heck, I can only imagine how this movie would be like if I actually was watching it high on drugs.

This movie is balls to the walls insane. I don’t mean “insane” in the sense that you are constantly shown a bunch of crazy stuff; although crazy stuff are present, but insane in the sense that this movie challenges us to accept it as it is, in terms of film-making, and it terms of the narrative. Unconventional story telling this is. Mainstream audience pleasing movie this is not. It’s easy to accuse Director Panos Cosmatos for over-indulging himself with this film, because he clearly had some ambitious ideas that he had to put on screen, and I guess screw you if you don’t like it.

Now the main thing that I think this movie will get praised for is the visual style. Unfortunately I would say that this is likely going to be one of the elements that people will criticize it for as well. From the title cards, the color palette, the long lingering scenes, the flow of the story, the inspirations from heavy metal cover albums, to the fact that there are hand drawn animated bits, it’s going to be hard to argue that you aren’t watching some visionary work. Those long lingering scenes though, can really linger way too long at times. Plus the flow of the story could probably require some more editing, as the pacing and transitions can be completely off.

The cinematography for this film is amazing, especially considering how dark the whole thing is. “Dark” in the sense that the majority of the scenes are set in darkness, not necessarily that the subject matter is dark; although that can be true too. The musical score is also spectacular, and absolutely compliments the film in the best possible way. This is also one of the very last scores composed by the now late Johann Johannsson. Combine the look and sound of the movie, and we’ve got ourselves the perfect unnerving and uncomfortable tone and feel to the whole thing. It was hard not to be completely sucked in to the world that was presented here.

As for the story itself, while I liked some of the gonzo and trashy ideas that it offers to us, it’s not exactly cohesively told, nor is it brilliant either. There’s definitely several thought provoking things to chew on though, but I sometimes felt like the movie was either being pretentious, or it just thinks that it’s smarter than it really is. It’s all over the place too in terms of plot pay offs, and it only made me feel like I just need a little bit more than what was given. I’m not even asking for direct obvious answers to certain plot points, but I am referring to certain scenes that just felt unfulfilling, as if they were just teasing us of something that could have been better.

Of course many people will watch this for “crazy” Nicolas Cage, and sure he does indeed bring in some acting that absolutely swings for the fences. Here’s the thing though... Linus Roache absolutely outshines Cage here. Wow was his over-the-top performance as Jeremiah Sand just brilliant, and it’s worth watching this movie just to see what he does with the role. As for the title character and the rest of the actresses however, let’s just say that the setting for this story takes place in the early 1980s, and the writing for the female characters here could probably have been from that era as well.

While I’m not all-in with “Mandy,” I do admire the film-making of it. Many will call it too artsy for their taste, and I wouldn’t blame them. I myself found some of it to be rather boring to watch, and grew impatient with it at times. Then there were scenes that I found highly engaging, and smiled at some of the over-the-top elements that I can’t believe they actually put in the movie. Needless to say, this isn’t for everyone, but it definitely is quite the experience. Of course your mileage may vary.

the after party

POSITIVES...
- Those who like all things hip-hop related, from up and coming rappers trying to break the scene, appearances by artists like Wiz Khalifa or French Montana, to websites like WorldStarHipHop, should get a kick out of this movie.
- The general premise is basically the “one crazy night” scenario, with a touch of John Hughes. Enjoyable enough for what it is.
- There is some style and flair to the direction that keeps things interesting to watch.
- I liked the character of Owen; as played by artist Kyle, and was genuinely interested with where he would end up at the end of the story.

NEGATIVES....
 - I didn’t like the character of Jeff that much and found him too annoying (even though I’m sure that was the point). Harrison Holzer played the role well enough I suppose.
- The subplot involving Alicia, played by Shelley Hennig, was just too patronizing and diminishes the worth of her character in likely unintentional ways.
- Personally, I take issue in how the women were represented here, and I wished there was more character development given to them.
- The overall story kinda goes all over the place a lot, with logic and reality be damned.

papillon

POSITIVES…
- Charlie Hunnam does a fantastic job in portraying Henri Papillon Charriere.
- While Rami Malek is also really good in the role of Louis Dega, this is without a doubt Hunnam’s film.
- The character of Papillon is the emotional core of this story, and the main reason to get invested in sticking with the movie up to the end.
- There are some good set pieces that are worth remembering.
- One of the best true stories about escaping prison.

NEGATIVES…
- Despite the amazing tale, the movie somehow has a rather pedestrian narrative.
- Perhaps the direction is too straight-forward in translating the story on screen, and doesn’t have enough style and flourishes for it to stand out as a great film.
- While some might already call the movie slow, I feel like it should have taken it’s time more with the story.

POSITIVES…
- Seeing Jennifer Garner be badass and kickass is always a good thing.
- She plays Riley North, an action hero you’re going to want to root for.
- Always satisfying seeing people get their much deserved comeuppance.
- It has a comfortably familiar revenge story.
- As an action thriller with a revenge plot premise, it’s perfectly fine.

NEGATIVES…
- The derivative and predictable premise may potentially feel boring to watch.
- While I like Riley North, her character development is kinda lacking here.
- Can a movie feel too generic?

the nun

POSITIVES…
- “the Nun;” also know as “Valak,” is easily one of the scariest looking horror movie characters in recent years. Just looking at the still image of it freaks me out.
- Demian Bichir and Taissa Farmiga are decently good in this film.
- They had some good ideas for some scary and creepy set pieces here.
- As a horror movie, it technically has all the right elements to scare people.

NEGATIVES…
- Unfortunately, besides the technical aspects of the film-making, the movie is just not that scary.
- It’s only scary in the basest technical manner, but the tone and direction doesn’t properly translate well for the audience.
- There are scenes in the movie that are genuinely creepy, but somehow they still came off somewhat tame for a horror movie.
- The scariest scene involving The Nun / Valak can be found on the Conjuring 2, which is my way of saying that this movie doesn’t completely live up to the horror potential of the character.

searching

If you like watching those True-crime stories about human interest mysteries, "Searching" is right up your alley. If you like thrillers about a determined protagonist that has to wade through a series of plot twists and plot turns to get to the bottom of a mystery, then "Searching" has what you're looking for. If you like dramas about Fathers that feel disconnected from their teenage child, then "Searching" is a movie for you. If you like communicating with people via messaging or video platforms on the internet, then "Searching" will feed that addiction. If you are fascinated by what you can discover and accomplish on your computers or smart phones, then "Searching" should wow you.

Directed by Aneesh Chagantry, this story absolutely captivated me right from the get-go, all the way until the end. At times it was heartwarming or emotional, and in other times it was quite thrilling or suspenseful. The story manages to take me on a journey that's filled with twists and turns, which is what makes a good mystery very enjoyable to watch. Besides the clever plot, what also made this film so effective and fresh is that it's part of this burgeoning "screen life" film genre, where the majority of the time we are watching a computer screen or a video image captured from a device.

The plot reveals and story flows incredibly well in this "screen life" format, which allows us the chance to be entertained passively by what's happening on screen, or to be active in proactively looking for clues on a computer desktop screen. There are times when I would see something at a corner of the (computer) screen or lines of dialogue in a messaging thread, that looks like an important piece of information, and then the movie acknowledges my discovery and focuses on it. That's awesome. The way this movie does these kinds of plot development is quite entertaining to watch, and justifies the rationale of why the story is told to us via this method of story telling. There is a lot of plot conveniences though, but the writing is so solid that I'll have to just chalk it up to them being clever coincidences instead

Another highlight to point out that makes this movie a success is John Cho as David Kim, the Father of this story. He goes through the wringer in this, and had to express many different kinds of emotions that have to seem very naturalistic. John Cho also had to act primarily just in front of a webcam, which seems very appropriate for a movie like this. It's hard not to root for John Cho here, because he and his character both deserves that. I should also point out that it can be entertaining to see David Kim navigate through the internet, because he isn't always knowledgeable in some of the things his Daughter does on the world wide web.

I get that it's easy to dismiss "Searching" as another movie trying out the cheap gimmick that is the "screen-life" genre, but then you'll be missing out on something fresh and special here. This is an experience absolutely worth checking out, and arguably the first of it's genre that should actually be considered great.

the happytime murders

If a Rated-R, raunchy, rude, and outrageous movie that involves puppets, is something you'd like to watch, then go ahead and check out "The Happytime Murders." I'm assuming that you must have already seen the red-band trailer, and thought that this movie is going to be hilarious to watch from front to back. Well, you thought wrong. Now for those of you who were immediately offended by the content shown in the trailer, feel free to not watch this movie. You're not missing that much.

To the movie's credit, it does make every attempt in the world to be hilarious through and through. In fact, the funniest scene in the whole movie wasn't even in that promotional trailer. With that said, most of the jokes are just mildly amusing, which is admittedly a disappointing thing to say for people expecting a laugh-riot. It's just really awkward seeing many jokes fall flat, or humor that only manages to get a silent nod of acknowledgement recognizing that there was a joke that made an attempt to make people laugh.

Truth be told, the biggest mistake this movie made, is that it relied on it's outrageousness to carry the whole thing through until the end. Which is ironic, since the outrageous nature of the premise is the likely reason people do want to see it. Unfortunately, the shock factor of seeing puppets curse and do sexual acts might seem like a hilarious thing at first, but then it sinks in that the explicit nature of those jokes can only go so far before you just get bored or desensitized by them. Some of it did work though, but that doesn't happen often enough.

The saving grace that makes the time spent watching it worth it, is the world building that was established in the premise. The human-puppet social commentary theme was genuinely something I'd like to see more of in much better movie as well. There are also some jokes that were actually good and even clever, that legitimately worked, and didn't rely on shock value alone. Then there's the movie's murder-mystery plot itself, that I found myself invested in seeing things through until the conclusion. Plus although it isn't perfect, the interactions between Melissa McCarthy's Detective Edwards, and Bill Berretta's puppet Private Investigator Phil Philips, was entertaining enough for me.

Despite all the criticism that can be tossed at "The Happytime Murders," it's not a terribly made movie by any means. It's just mediocre at best, that fits perfectly well in the "disposable entertainment" trash bin. Of course we still should at least admire the work done in making those puppets come to life. I know I personally wouldn't mind seeing more of this world that the movie created, but let's just hope that it's for a much better film next time. If there's even a next time.

to all the boys i've loved before

Sometimes you really just want the comfort of a familiar romantic-comedy to enjoy watching, and "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" is that movie. It can't be denied, but it does follow derivative plot tropes that usually comes with this genre, but I'm however going to say that this movie is able to add it's own fine unique touches to make this film stand out anyway. Kinda like the lead character of this story, who is your typical normal teenage girl that blends in a crowd, but as it goes with the premise, this is the time she stands out.

Speaking of that lead character to this story, Lana Condor who plays Lara Jean Covey, is one of this movie's secret weapon. She is absolutely charming, and quirky, and energetic, that she just simply jumps out at you to get your attention. Believe me, you're going to find yourself unable to not pay attention to what Lara does. With this movie as proof, Lana Condor is poised to be a strong actress for comedic roles such as this, for many years to come.

The other secret weapon of this movie are simply the interactions Lara has with the other characters. Somehow this movie was able to create such charming and entertaining scenes involving Lara with her sister Kitty; played by Anna Cathcart, Lara with her older sister Margot; played by Janel Parrish, Lara and Josh, played by Israel Broussard, Lara and Peter, played by Noah Centineo, and even Lara and her Dad; played by John Corbett. All the supporting cast are excellent in this, and I'd like to go deeper with some of those relationships, but we're spoilers free still!

Based on a young-adult novel by Jenny Han, starring young actors, in a coming-of-age romantic-comedy, it may seem like there isn't much this can offer to other movie watching demographics besides teenagers. There is one important thing that "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" does offer to everybody however, entertainment! While it isn't without it's flaws, this is an enjoyable movie that everybody can absolutely have fun watching.
