POSITIVES…
- Charlie Hunnam does a fantastic job in portraying Henri Papillon Charriere.
- While Rami Malek is also really good in the role of Louis Dega, this is without a doubt Hunnam’s film.
- The character of Papillon is the emotional core of this story, and the main reason to get invested in sticking with the movie up to the end.
- There are some good set pieces that are worth remembering.
- One of the best true stories about escaping prison.
NEGATIVES…
- Despite the amazing tale, the movie somehow has a rather pedestrian narrative.
- Perhaps the direction is too straight-forward in translating the story on screen, and doesn’t have enough style and flourishes for it to stand out as a great film.
- While some might already call the movie slow, I feel like it should have taken it’s time more with the story.
