POSITIVES…
If you’re looking for a teenager targeted “Step-Up” type of dance movie, all with that comfortable premise of a rag-tag group of kids with can-do-spirit to succeed, then I guess this is for you.
It’s got a good cast. From Sabrina Carpenter, Liza Koshy, Jordan Fisher, Keiynan Lonsdale, and Michelle Buteau.
Dance scenes in general are entertaining to watch, even the ones where Sabrina Carpenter is awkwardly trying to dance.
Actually there were some enjoyable scenes and gags here and there that put a smile on my face.
The over the top nature of Keiynan Lonsdale’s character and his posse is trashy fun.
NEGATIVES…
Yes, you’ve seen this movie before. Yes, it has a lot of the familiar plot tropes and cliches.
One of those particular plot cliches was introduced, then hardly explored much at all, which made it all seem completely unnecessary.
Expect those plot conveniences and unresolved story beats.
I may not be a dancer, but when compared to other dance movies, a lot of the dancing here looks… basic? Like I’m just watching Fortnite dances or TikTok moves most of the time.
While it’s not a bad movie, it’s not exactly inspired either.
